José Manuel Barroso

José Manuel Barros is a Portuguese politician.

He is the Chair of Gavi, the Vaccine Alliance.

History

In his university days, Barroso was a leader of the Portuguese Workers' Communist Party/Re-Organized Movement of the Party of the Proletariat, a Maoist political party in Portugal.1)

World Economic Forum (1993)

Barroso was named a Global Leader for Tomorrow by the World Economic Forum in 1993.2) He was part of the inaugural class of what would later became known as the “Young Global Leaders” program. His fellow classmates included Tony Blair, Bono, Richard Branson, Gordon Brown, Bill Gates, Yo-Yo Ma, Angela Merkel, Nicolas Sarkozy, George Stephanopoulos, Larry Summers, and (by some accounts) Vladimir Putin.3) 4)

Bilderberg Group (1994-present)

Barroso is a member of the Bilderberg Steering Committee, having participated in many meetings of the Bilderberg Group from 1994 through to at least 2019.5)

Prime Minister of Portugal (2002-2004)

Barroso served as the Prime Minister of Portugal from 2002-2004.6) In March 2003, Barroso met with United States President George W. Bush, British Prime Minister Tony Blair, and Spanish Prime Minister José María Aznar to finalize plans to launch the US invasion of Iraq.7)

European Commission (2004-2014)

Barroso served as President of the European Commission from 2004-2014.8) He led the launch of Horizon 2020, the European Union funding programme for scientific research and innovation.9)

Goldman Sachs International (2016-present)

Barroso is the non-executive chairman of Goldman Sachs International.10)

Gavi, the Vaccine Alliance (2021-2022)

In September 2020, the Gavi Board appointed Barroso as its new Chair for a two-year term beginning in January 2021.11)

Other Affiliations

Chatham House

Barroso is a senior advisor of Chatham House,12) which has received funding from the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation to “discuss the value of vaccines in reducing the impact of antimicrobial resistance” and other vaccine-focused initiatives.13) 14) 15) Chatham House’s corporate partners include pharmaceutical companies Bayer, GlaxoSmithKline and Sanofi.16)

Kofi Annan Foundation

Since 2016, Barroso has served as a member of the Electoral Integrity Initiative for the Kofi Annan Foundation.17) The KAF is funded by the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, Facebook, Meta, Twitter, and Open Society Foundations.18)

The foundation is partnered with the Global Commission on Drug Policy, International Drug Policy Consortium, UNESCO, United Nations, and the United Nations Foundation.19)

Women Political Leaders

Barroso is a Member of the Global Advisory Board for Women Political Leaders.20) WPL is partnered with the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, Centene, Facebook, Google, Mastercard, Merck, UCB Pharma, United Nations, United Nations Foundation, Vifor Pharma, and the World Bank.21)
