David Boulware

David R. Boulware, MD, MPH is an American infectious diseases researcher based in Minnesota. He is a professor and physician at the University of Minnesota Medical School and faculty member at the University of Minnesota School of Public Health.¹⁾

Boulware graduated from Wabash College in 1996.²⁾

Boulware joined the faculty of the University of Minnesota in 2007. He was named to the Lois and Richard King Distinguished Assistant Professorship at UMN in 2011.³⁾

He conducts research on HIV immune reconstitution inflammatory syndrome (IRIS) at the Center for Infectious Diseases and Microbiology Translational Research (CIDMTR) in collaboration with researchers at the Infectious Diseases Institute (IDI) in Kampala, Uganda.⁴⁾

Boulware served as principal investigator in the first randomized clinical trial testing hydroxychloroquine for the post-exposure prevention of COVID-19, which began on March 17, 2020.⁵⁾ The study, titled “Post-exposure Prophylaxis or Preemptive Treatment for SARS-Coronavirus-2”, was funded by Jan and David Baszucki, Steve Kirsch, University of Minnesota Foundation, the Alliance of Minnesota Chinese Organizations and Minnesota Chinese Chamber of Commerce.⁶⁾ Further funding for the Canadian arms of the trial came from:⁷⁾

Collaborators and trial sites included the University of Minnesota, University of Alberta, University of Manitoba and the Research Institute of the McGill University Health Centre.⁸⁾ The hydroxychloroquine for the trial was donated by Rising Pharmaceuticals in the United States and Apotex in Canada.⁹⁾

On June 3, 2020, the results of Boulware's trial were published in the New England Journal of Medicine (NEJM), finding that “hydroxychloroquine did not prevent illness compatible with Covid-19 or confirmed infection when used as postexposure prophylaxis within 4 days after exposure.”¹⁰⁾
