Centre for the Study of Existential Risk
The Centre for the Study of Existential Risk (CSER) is a British research centre based in Cambridge, England. It operates within the University of Cambridge.
Its stated purpose of operation is to study and mitigate risks that could lead to human extinction or civilizational collapse.1)
History
Founding
Martin Rees founded CSER in 2012 with Huw Price (professor of philosophy at the University of Cambridge), and Jaan Tallinn (co-founder of Skype).2)
The launch “received considerable interest from the section of the altruist community interested in safeguarding the future,” according to a post on the Effective Altruism Forum written by the CSER's founding director Seán Ó hÉigeartaigh.3) CSER “received some very valuable advice and support from members of the effective altruism community.”
