Tom Closson

Tom Closson is a Canadian healthcare executive and consultant based in Toronto, Ontario. He runs Tom Closson Consulting,1) and is a volunteer advisor for MaRS Health Venture Services.2) He also volunteers as a crisis responder for Kids Help Phone.

He currently serves on the Board of Directors of LifeLabs, the Canadian Foundation for Healthcare Improvement and Health Quality Ontario, and chairs the Health Policy Council at the C.D. Howe Institute.3)

He has previously served as president and CEO of the Ontario Hospital Association (OHA), University Health Network (UHN), Capital Health Region and Sunnybrook Health Sciences Centre.4)

Government positions have included serving as Chief Information Officer for the Ontario Ministry of Community and Social Services as well as management positions with the Ontario Ministry of Health and Management Board. He isa Fellow of the Canadian Academy of Engineering and a Certified Healthcare Executive.

History

Education

Closson graduated from the University of Toronto with a Bachelor of Applied Science in Industrial Engineering, and earned his Master of Business Administration at York University.

Career

Closson began his career doing Industrial Engineering at SickKids.

Closson was a part owner of Medicus Canada, and worked as a partner with KPMG.

While serving as President of the Ontario Hospital Association (OHA), in October 2010, Closson issued an apology following a report from Ontario's Auditor General Jim McCarter which found “too many hospitals awarded contracts to consultants and lobbyists without competitive bids and with 'lax controls' on expenses.”5)

He stepped down from his position in 2012, at which point he began work as a health systems consultant.6)
