Peter Sloly
Peter John Sloly is the former Chief of the Ottawa Police Service (OPS).1) He is notable in the COVID-19 pandemic for his role in the institutional response to the Freedom Convoy 2022, which led to his resignation on February 15, 2022.
Education
Sloly received a Bachelor of Arts in Sociology from McMaster University in 1989, and a Master of Business Administration from York University's Schulich School of Business in 2004. He is a graduate of the FBI National Academy.2)

Canada Men's National Soccer Team (1984)
Prior to his police career, Sloly played soccer, including for the Canada men's national team in 1984.
Toronto Police Service (1988 - 2016)
Sloly joined the Toronto Police Service (TPS) in 1988 where he served for 27 years, including as a deputy chief of police from 2009 to 2016.3)
United Nations
In 2001, Sloly became the first senior Toronto cop to take part in the United Nations Peacekeeping Mission in Kosovo in 2001. He was elevated to a command staff rank and put in charge of coordinating all operational policies and strategic planning for the UN Civilian Force of 10,000 from 52 countries. He was also appointed the UN Mission Canadian contingent commander.4)
Deloitte
Prior to joining the OPS, Chief Sloly was a Partner and National Security & Justice Leader at Deloitte.5) His “security” work involved helping clients defend against complex physical and cyber threats. His clientele included “Fortune 100 social media companies, global financial sector institutions and national retail organizations.”6)
Ottawa Police Service (2019 - present)
Sloly became the Chief of the Ottawa Police Service in October 2019.7) He was encouraged to apply for the job earlier in 2019 by Ewart Walters, former Jamaican diplomat and publisher of the defunct ‘The Spectrum’ community newspaper.8) Sloly was supported by Ottawa lobbying group Black Agenda Noir, with which Walters is associated, which lobbied the Ottawa Police Service Board and Jim Watson (Mayor of Ottawa) to have Sloly appointed.
Sloly resigned from his position as Chief on February 15, 2022.9)
