Kali Barrett

Dr. Kali Alyssa Barrett, M.D., MSc, FRCPC is a Canadian physician based in Toronto, Ontario.

Education

Barrett received her Bachelor of Arts with a major in Art History and a minor in Health Studies at Queen’s University, in Kingston, Ontario. She received her Medical degree from the Schulich School of Medicine and Dentistry at the University of Western Ontario. She completed her training in Internal Medicine and Adult Critical Care Medicine at the University of Toronto. She has a Master’s of Science in Health Policy, Planning & Financing from the London School of Economics & Policy, and the London School of Hygiene & Tropical Medicine, and was awarded the Brian Abel Smith award for top marks in her course work and thesis. She is currently pursuing additional training in health technology assessment at the Institute of Health Policy, Management and Evaluation at U of T.

Barrett is an attending physician at the Toronto Western Hospital, part of the University Health Network.1)

Health Quality Ontario

She serves on the Ontario Health Technology Advisory Committee at Health Quality Ontario (now part of Ontario Health), which reviews the economic and clinical evidence for health technologies and makes recommendations regarding whether they should be publicly funded in Ontario.3)

Critical Care Canada Forum

Barrett has been a speaker at the Critical Care Canada Forum, which is sponsored by Masimo, Medtronic, Merck, and Paladin Labs.4) 5)

Renewing Our Democratic Alliance

Barrett has been a panelist for Renewing Our Democratic Alliance, a joint initiative between the Canadian International Council and the Konrad Adenauer Stiftung to “strengthen civil society cooperation among Canadian and German scholars, experts, and practitioners on key issues facing liberal democracies.”6)

Ontario COVID-19 Science Advisory Table

Barrett is a member of the secretariat of the Ontario COVID-19 Science Advisory Table, where she acts as a senior research associate.7)

COVID-19 Modelling Collaborative

Barrett is a core member of the COVID-19 Modelling Collaborative, a group of scientists and clinicians working on simulations to predict the health, health system, and economic impact of COVID-19.8) The group received funding from the Ontario Together Fund (OTF), a business grant program that supports manufacturing and innovation for goods and services “critical to the health, safety, and security of Ontarians.”9) 10)

Research

Her research is focused on the cost-effectiveness of critical care programs and delivery, as well as evidence-based policy development. She has published papers on H1N1 swine flu.11)

Funding

Barrett disclosed personal fees from Xenios, a Fresenius company, for COPD-associated research.12) 13)
