In a a July 22, 2022 video, Campbell expressed frustration at the lack of initiative taken by governments and well-resourced researchers as far as investigating the role of seaweed in the prevention of COVID-19.2) Campbell explained that seaweed contains high levels of iodine, which when digested is absorbed to your mucous membrane, providing protection against the SARS-CoV-2 virus. He speculated that this is a primary reason why Japan has maintained a relatively low burden of COVID-19 during the pandemic, as seaweed is a commonplace dietary item there.
