Gabe Bankman-Fried

Gabriel Bankman-Fried, occasionally referred to as GBF, is an American political activist. He is the brother of Sam Bankman-Fried and son of Barbara Fried and Joseph Bankman.

History

GBF attended Canada/USA MathCamp alongside his brother, Sam.1)

Bankman-Fried graduated from Brown University in 2017 with a degree in computer science. He briefly worked at Jane Street Capital (after his brother left)2) and then at Civis Analytics.3)

Despite not officially working at Mind the Gap, Bankman-Fried was frequently included in e-mail discussions in 2018 and would contribute in a “volunteer capacity.”4)

Following the successful 2018 election for the Democratic Party, Bankman-Fried was hired by Illinois congressman Sean Casten as a legislative correspondent.

Guarding Against Pandemics

In mid-2021, Bankman-Fried left Casten's office to take advantage of Sam Bankman-Fried's growing wealth by starting Guarding Against Pandemics. In April 2022, he purchased a $3.3 million townhouse in Washington, D.C.5) He reportedly used money from GAP to help defeat the recall effort against California Governor Gavin Newsom.

In June 2022, Bankman-Fried participated in an investment round for a new media company called Semafor, attending the White House Correspondents Dinner with company founders Justin Smith and Ben Smith shortly after.6) 7) The brothers also attended several meetings at the White House with senior members of President Joe Biden's staff.

FTX collapse

In November 2022, after the collapse of FTX and its associated companies and organizations, Gabe resigned from Guarding Against Pandemics.8)

In January 2023, Semafor announced they would be returning the investments made by Gabe and Sam Bankman-Fried, which had not yet been converted into equity.9)
