The Advisory Board Company

About Us 2002

The Advisory Board is a membership of 2,100 of the country's largest and most progressive health systems and medical centers.

The Advisory Board provides best practices research and analysis to the health care industry, focusing on business strategy, operations and general management issues.

Gathering data across and beyond the membership, the Advisory Board publishes daily and weekly news services, 50 major studies and 3,000 customized research briefs each year on progressive management and clinical practices in health care.

In general, the research focuses on the best (and worst) demonstrated practices, helping member institutions benefit from one another's learning curves.

Economies of Intellect

The Advisory Board proceeds with the view that there are economies of intellect in medicine, compelling intellectual advantages to large numbers of health systems, corporations, and physicians working together to document best practices.

The financial advantage of cooperation is familiar—the savings realized when large numbers share in the cost of developing a common curriculum and common publishing enterprise.

The economies of intellect, however, are more compelling. After twenty years in publishing, the Advisory Board believes in a “diaspora of truth.” In any moment, a handful of markets, systems, and corporations hold the lead in reforming health care. Over time, however, no health system, no model, no geography holds a monopoly on progress.

The commitment of the Advisory Board is to work in common enterprise with the best of America's universities, health systems, corporations, and physicians, documenting the most important advances in medicine, no matter their genesis. 1)
