A probiotic is a living microorganism presumed or demonstrated to provide health benefits. Mechanisms of benefits stem from most often from the interplay between the body and gut flora, and most often the extremely diverse array of bacteria in the gut or other places in the body. Currently, the nascient science of probiotics and microbiome research are expanding, and hotly debated.
