Timothy Caulfield
Education
Caulfield has received honorary degrees from Simon Fraser University and the University of Calgary.
Career
Early career
From 1988-1990, Caulfield worked as a legal researcher at the University of Alberta's Health Law Institute.1) He then moved to work at law firm Bryan & Company as a “student-at-law”, and then lawyer, until 1992.
University of Alberta
In 1996, Caulfield was made an Assistant Professor in U of A's Faculty of Law, then added a position as Associate Professor in the Faculty of Medicine & Dentistry in 1999. In 2004, he became a Professor in the Faculty of Law and at the School of Public Health, a position he holds to this day. He is Research Director of the Health Law Institute.2) 3) He became a Tier II Canada Research Chair in Health Law and Policy in 2002, and then Tier I in 2009 (renewed in 2016).4) 5)
In 2007 and 2008, Caulfield was Director of Research for the Commission of Inquiry on Hormone Receptor Testing on behalf of the Government of Newfoundland and Labrador.
Visiting Professorships
Caulfield has completed several visiting scholarships:
- 2011: Visiting scholar at University of Ediburgh's Scottish Research Centre for IP and Technology Law
- 2012: Erasmus Mundus Visiting Scholar at the University of Leuven
- 2014: Visiting Professor at the University of Basel, Switzerland
- 2005: Visiting Professor at the University of Houston Health Law and Policy Institute
Television
In 2016, Caulfield began working with Peacock Alley Entertainment as co-producer and host of the television show, “A User’s Guide to Cheating Death”.
Affiliations
Caulfield is a fellow of the Royal Society of Canada, the Canadian Academy of Health Sciences and the Pierre Elliott Trudeau Foundation.6) He sits on the Ethics Committee for the World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA).7)
