Interferon

Interferons (IFN) are any of a group of signaling proteins associated with immunological response to the presence of viral infection. An infected cell releases interferons to inform other cells of the need to mount a defense. The presence of other cytokines such as interleukins can enhance the production if interferons.

Different interferons are denoted with capital Roman numerals or lower case Greek letters.
