Deshayne Fell

Dr. Deshayne Fell is a Canadian perinatal epidemiologist based in Ottawa, Ontario.

Career and Affiliations

CHEO Research Institute

Fell is a scientist at the CHEO Research Institute.1)

University of Ottawa

Fell is an Associate Professor in the School of Epidemiology and Public Health at the University of Ottawa.

ICES

Fell is an Adjunct Scientist at the Institute for Clinical Evaluative Sciences (ICES).

World Health Organization

Fell has been a member of two WHO Technical Advisory Groups related to maternal immunization.2)

Society for Epidemic Research

Fell is a faculty member of the Society for Epidemic Research.3)

World Vaccine Congress

Fell presented at the World Vaccine Congress in April 2022 on the subject of maternal immunity and vaccines.4) The WVC is sponsored by Baxter, BD, CanSinoBio, Codex DNA, Dynavax, Emergent BioSolutions, Eurofins, Immunomic Therapeutics, Intravacc, Janssen, Medicago, MilliporeSigma (a Merck company), Novavax, Sabin Vaccine Institute, Sanofi, Sino Biological, and VBI Vaccines, among many others.5)

Public Health Agency of Canada

Fell is a liaison representative for the Canadian Association for Immunization Research, Evaluation and Education (CAIRE) on the National Advisory Committee on Immunization (NACI), responsible for approving COVID-19 vaccines in Canada.6)

Research

Fell's research uses large, linked population databases and registries to improve our understanding of factors affecting maternal and infant population health. Her specific focus includes infection and immunization during pregnancy and their relationship with birth outcomes and longer-term pediatric health outcomes, including safety and effectiveness of maternal immunization.

Funding

Fell has conducted research with funding from the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation,7) 8) including as a Principal Investigator. At least one of these studies was also funded and/or coordinated by PATH and the WHO Initiative for Vaccine Research, funded by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).9)
