====== Interferon ======
**Interferons** (**IFN**) are any of a group of signaling proteins associated with immunological response to the presence of [[virus|viral infection]]. An infected cell releases interferons to inform other cells of the need to mount a defense. The presence of other [[cytokine|cytokines]] such as [[interleukin|interleukins]] can enhance the production if interferons.

Different interferons are denoted with capital Roman numerals or lower case Greek letters.
